Oral pathology refers to any disease of the mouth tissues. The mucosa, or lining of the mouth, is normally smooth and pink. Any lump, bump, or stubborn sore, as well as any change in the color of the mucosa, could indicate oral pathology. We will carefully examine the area and, if necessary, perform an oral biopsy to rule out the possibility of cancer. Please let us know if you notice any warning signs or have any concerns.

An incisional biopsy removes just a few cells, while an excisional biopsy removes an entire lesion. Which we perform will depend on the exact circumstances. For either type of biopsy, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area, and the biopsy will take approximately 30 minutes or less. We may use dissolving sutures to control bleeding.

After the biopsy, you will need to be careful not to bite your lips or tongue until the anesthetic wears off. When normal feeling returns to your mouth, you can eat, drink, and perform oral hygiene as usual, but be careful not to bite directly on the affected area for 24 hours. Mild discomfort is to be expected, which will respond well to over the counter painkillers. There is typically little bleeding, which can be stopped by applying direct pressure with a clean washcloth or sterile gauze pad for 10 minutes. You can return to your normal activities the next day.
