Oral pathology refers to any disease of the mouth tissues. The mucosa, or lining of the mouth, is normally smooth and pink. Any lump, bump, or stubborn sore, as well as any change in the color of the mucosa, could indicate oral pathology. We will carefully examine the area and, if necessary, perform an oral biopsy to rule out the possibility of cancer. Please let us know if you notice any warning signs or have any concerns.

Oral Biopsy

An incisional biopsy removes just a few cells, while an excisional biopsy removes an entire lesion. Which we perform will depend on the exact circumstances. For either type of biopsy, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area, and the biopsy will take approximately 30 minutes or less. We may use dissolving sutures to control bleeding.

After the biopsy, you will need to be careful not to bite your lips or tongue until the anesthetic wears off. When normal feeling returns to your mouth, you can eat, drink, and perform oral hygiene as usual, but be careful not to bite directly on the affected area for 24 hours. Mild discomfort is to be expected, which will respond well to over the counter painkillers. There is typically little bleeding, which can be stopped by applying direct pressure with a clean washcloth or sterile gauze pad for 10 minutes. You can return to your normal activities the next day.

We will schedule a follow-up appointment in a week or so to discuss your results. Treatment options depend on exactly what was found in the biopsy. We will carefully review our findings and recommend a course of action and treatment alternatives with you during your follow-up appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oral Pathology and Biopsy

What are the signs of mouth cancer?

A persistent lip or mouth sore, a white or red area on the inside of your mouth, abnormal growths or lumps in the mouth, pain, difficulty swallowing, and loose teeth are all signs of mouth cancer.

Is oral cancer curable?

Yes, oral cancer can be cured, especially if it is diagnosed in its earliest stages. This is why it is critical to get frequent oral cancer screenings and to contact Dr. Steel promptly if you have concerns about a suspicious lesion or changes in your mouth.

Is oral biopsy painful?

Before an oral biopsy, we numb the affected area with a local anesthetic, so you shouldn't feel any discomfort.

How long does an oral biopsy take?

The time it takes to perform an oral biopsy is usually around 15 minutes, although this can vary depending on the site.

Why would an oral biopsy be needed?

Oral biopsies are frequently needed if an oral cancer screening by a dentist identifies areas of concern, such as changes in the color or texture of soft tissues, tumors, or lesions. Patients may also identify these issues on their own and make an appointment with Dr. Steel for an assessment, in which case a biopsy may be indicated.
